BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team's senior midfielder Rhonda Jones was named the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Player-of-the-Year on Wednesday as the A-Sun announced the 2003 Women's Soccer All-Conference honors. FAU placed two players on the First-Team, three on the Second-Team and two on the All-Freshman Team, tying the program record for most All-Conference selections in a season. Jones becomes the second player from Florida Atlantic to be named Player-of-the-Year.
The most decorated athlete in program history, Jones led FAU (15-4, 9-1 A-Sun) to its second consecutive regular season co-championship and the school's first-ever no. 1 seed in the conference championship. She set career highs in goals (8) and points (19) as she moved from seventh to third on the FAU all-time points list. Jones becomes the first player in program history to earn A-Sun First-Team honors three consecutive years.
Sweeper Danielle Castro earned A-Sun First-Team honors for the first time in her career. The senior from Zephyrhills, FL, earned A-Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors and Soccer America Team-of-the-Week honors this season, becoming the first defender to earn both awards in a season in program history. Castro set the program's all-time assists record by recording her 15th career assist in the team's 1-0 win against Colorado College. Castro earned Second Team honors last season.
Second Team
Krista Fine earned A-Sun Second-Team honors, joining Jones and Molly Keating as the only player in program history to earn All-Conference honors three consecutive years. The senior from Delray Beach, FL consistently shut down opposing team's top forwards. Fine earned A-Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors once this season, becoming the first defender to earn that award twice in her career.
Keating earned A-Sun Second Team honors for the third consecutive year. Keating ranked fourth in the conference with a 0.76 goals-against average while allowing only four goals in 10 conference games. The senior from Inverness, FL, broke her own record for most wins in a season as she holds every keeper record at FAU. Keating also holds the school and conference record for most Defensive Player-of-the-Week awards (7) and is the only player in program history to earn Conference honors all four years.
Denise Brolly earned A-Sun Second Team honors in her first year with the team. The N. Lanarkshire, Scotland native recorded double-digit points off of three goals and four assists while leading the team in shots.
All-Freshman Team
Christina Chang, from Cooper City, FL, finished second on the team in goals and points and third in assists, after spending her first year learning a new position. A former midfielder, Chang recorded five goals and three assists in the second half of the season and has scored seven goals and recorded 17 points overall.
Cristina Rodriguez, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, becomes the first defender to be named to the All-Freshman Team in program history. Rodriguez has started every game for the Lady Owls while assisting on three goals.
