The Florida Atlantic women's soccer team lost to the University of Memphis 2-1 in a game marred by many fouls. Brandi Herrmann scored with 20 minutes to play to lower the deficit but the Lady Tigers were able to hold off FAU's last minute push to tie the game. A goal by Leanne McGee in the ninth minute of the game took the sail out of the Lady Owl's play, with which they could not recover. The two teams combined for a total of 45 fouls, in which six yellow cards were handed out.
"I think we were in a situation where we liked to test the water, see what kind of effort it's going to take and then we decide to start bringing our level to our opponent," said Head Coach Brian Dooley. "Tonight, while were sitting around putting our toe in the water, they decided to take the game away from us. You could just see their start, their effort level, their energy and we didn't have an answer for it."
Memphis was able to put pressure on FAU with aggressive play and disciplined passes that cut their way through the defense. The Lady Owls defense did not distribute well and their opponents took advantage of it. McGee got her shot early when the defense collapsed on a give and go allowing her lots of space to dribble and put a shot by FAU keeper Molly Keating. The offense could not do much either with missed opportunity after another and only getting one shot on goal the entire first half.. Trina Maso de Moya tried to get something going in the 30th minute with a through ball to Danielle DiLeo that went just long into keeper Katarina Wicksell's hands. Just as time was expiring and the Owls seemed to be getting things together the Lady Tigers struck again on a beautifully passed cross ball from Anna Thorsdoltir to Alison Baker who put the ball into the back of the net just passed the outstretched hands of Keating.
FAU came out aggressive and with a chip on their shoulder as they quickly turned the tables and put constant pressure on Memphis. The offense was able to move the ball more freely on their opponents side of the field and they were finally able to get some shots on goal. Herrmann re-entered the game and immediately made an impact as she made a quick run on the right hand side of the goal and took a pass from Julie Ferguson. From there the goalie was her only obstacle as the defense had failed to mark her. A left footed shot that put the ball into the back of the net cut the lead to one.
"They were up with a two goal lead at the half, so they were being a little bit conservative," said coach Dooley. "So we went after it and got a nice first goal."
The Owls attempted to put more and more pressure after the goal but Memphis was able to maneuver their way out. FAU seemed to run out of gas from there, using long balls to get the ball out and not looking for their short easy passes.
Florida Atlantic's next game is against Western Carolina on Sunday, September 1st at 2:00 pm at FAU Field. The Catamounts won their game earlier today versus Florida International 3-1.
