Volleyball Garners All-Conference Awards

Iana Andonova made her mark at Florida Atlantic University in her freshman season. The 6'1" middle blocker from Margate, FL earned this year's Freshman-of-the-Year award in the Atlantic Sun Conference and becomes the first FAU player to do so. Also earning conference honors were Abby Miner and Jeana Boyle who picked up Second Team recognition.
The only freshman to be listed in the top-10 in hitting, Andonova held a .277 hitting percentage after posting 299 kills in 667 attempts. She finished the regular season second on the team in kills and kills per game (2.88). In defensive statistics, she is second on the team with 70 blocks.
What is most impressive about Andonova is the fact that she has only played volleyball since her junior year of high school. "The main reason we recruited her was because of her athleticism and her willingness to learn and I believe that her athleticism has allowed her to improve so much. I think that since the game is so new to her she has not gotten bored with the game and has a desire to learn." said head coach Jody Brown.
Two juniors, Boyle and Miner, earned Second Team A-Sun honors. A native of Boca Raton, FL, Boyle ran the Owl offense and dished out 1129 assists. Her aggressive play and desire allowed her to pick up 202 digs, second on the team, from the right side which traditionally does not see the most action. "Jeana has done a fantastic job for us this year and will continue to master our offense in the next year," said Brown.
Abby Miner finished the season sixth in the A-Sun in kills (379) and averaged 3.79 kills per game to lead the Owls. Miner, from Largo, FL, is in her first season with the Owls after transferring. Brown believes Miner should be a complete player her senior season. "Abby had to adapt quickly to a new system when she joined the team during preseason. After she has had a year to learn the system she will be an even better all-around player."
Florida Atlantic will enter the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on November 22 when they play Troy State University at 1 pm at the University of Central Florida. FAU enters the tournament as the no. 3 seed and will face TSU for the second time this season. On October 26, the Owls defeated the Trojans in five-games at Trojan Arena.
