Boca Raton, Fla. - Playing in their first home game in more than an month Friday night, Florida Atlantic University was able to defeat Belmont University 10-0 and increase their winning streak to four. Eight different players scored goals for the Lady Owls as Rhonda Jones led the attack with two goals and three assists for the second highest goal total in women's soccer program history.

"This was our first home game since September 1st and we were on the road for so long that we forgot what it was like to have the luxury of playing at home on such a nice surface," said Head Coach Brian Dooley. "We were in front of our fans again and it was a good performance by our team as a whole."

FAU (6-3, 3-1 A-Sun) started the game slowly as the Bruins (0-10-0, 0-3-0) settled in and played very defensively. In the 20th minute of play, off of a corner kick from Danielle Castro, Jones headed a pass to Trina Maso de Moya who hit a scissor kick shot past Belmont keeper Ali Young for her sixth goal of the season and first of the game. Ten minutes later Castro set up another goal when she took a free kick from the corner and placed it at the front post to a waiting Julie Ferguson. Ferguson immediately dropped the pass to the middle of the box where Jones came bolting in and one-timed the shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

"We were moving the ball around and possessing the ball a little bit too deliberately and slowly because they were pressuring with their defense," said coach Dooley on the teams slow start but big finish. "It was one of those games that once we got the first everything started to flow. "

Near the end of the first half Kari Kaiser made a run down the line and crossed the ball to a wide open Jessica Kmiotek who put the ball past Young to bring the score to 3-0. Not less than 30 seconds later Jones set up Lauren Lucena for her third goal of the season and a 4-0 lead going into the half to put the game out of reach. The Lady Owl defense allowed only three shots in the first half and no corners as they continually smothered the Bruin attack. Krista Fine shadowed her mark and caused visible frustration throughout the game for the Belmont forwards.

"We needed this game really because we've had a few hard games lately," said Jones. "We got a lot of goals from a lot of people, it wasn't just one scorer and that is going to bring our confidence up. We passed the ball better and opened up in the back better and we started to see things that happened to us last year in the end so that is a confidence builder as well."

The Bruins came out aggressive in the second half despite being down by four goals. The team played almost too aggressive though as a minute into the half Maso de Moya took a bad pass from the goalie and put it into the back of the net for a 5-0 lead. A minute later Kelly Hoffman scored off of a cross by Brandi Herrmann, as the sophomore headed the ball past Young to bring the score to 6-0.

In the 60th minute Jones assisted on her third goal when she shot the ball from the top of the box and hit the bottom of the cross-bar. Janine Aylward headed the rebound in for her first goal of the season to make the score 7-0. Minutes later Jones was able to put in her second goal as Julie Ferguson found the midfielder streaking towards goal. Jones took in the pass, used a nifty move around the goalie and scored the goal to make the score 8-0.

In the 80th minute Kimberly Brindley scored her first goal of her career when she took a pass from Kari Kaiser and struck it past the keeper to bring the score to 9-0. Belmont had their best chance to score at the restart as the Bruins pushed down the field and forced a corner on FAU. On the ensuing kick, the ball went just over the head of Anna Dinwiddie out of bounds to end the threat. From the goalie kick, Brean Foreman hit a long pass to Herrmann who put in her second goal of the season to end the scoring for FAU and put the score to 10-0.

Molly Keating saved three shots in the first half before giving way to Melissa Cancio to start the second half. Cancio saved one shot in the second half as the Lady Owl defense continued to keep the Bruin attack out of FAU territory. Christine Lilley replaced Cancio with 15 minutes remaining and helped preserve the win and keep Belmont out after two tough corner kicks.

Julie Ferguson extended her point streak to eight straight games as she assisted on two goals to bring her team leading total to seven. Rhonda Jones and Lauren Lucena, after both scoring in the game, are now tied for sixth place on the all-time points list with 35.

The Lady Owls play their next game against in-state rival South Florida Sunday, October 6th in Tampa, Fla. FAU plays their next home game Wednesday, October 16th against conference foe Stetson at 7:00 pm.
