Josephine is doing fine. Real life decided to invade our world again this week. Coach Mazza's baby girl was hospitalized last week with a severe infection. Tammy could not make the road trip with us this time because she needed to be with her little girl. It was a difficult time for Tammy and her family (that includes the women's soccer team). Our thoughts were with her all weekend and everything has turned out well. Josephine is back home and is active as ever. It is never easy when one of the team is going through difficult times. It makes you realize that life has a way of throwing you a few yellow cards along the way. Just keep the red cards away, right Julie!
It seems that a new addiction has come over our team. It is something to be concerned about and I don't really know what to do about it. It is spreading among the players and it is becoming time consuming. I do not think there are support groups set up or any 12-step programs to help. I am just waiting for it to start creating a real problem. I do not know if any other schools are facing this problem, but any advice will help. The kids are fighting over it and quite frankly, I haven't seen anything like this ever. It is......... Scrabble. The game is on the handheld palm pilot computers and the kids are playing all the time. Making up words and getting double and triple letter scores for "x" and "q" and "z". The triple word score usually brings a roar from the players. They play against the computer, they play against themselves and invariably they play and lose to me. When you travel as much as we have this season, you have to find a way to pass the time. I am particularly concerned about Julie Ferguson. She cannot go for one minute without a fix. I think she makes up words when she plays. It goes like this: Coach: "Julie, I don't think q-u-a-x-e-w-o-z is a valid word." Julie: "Well, it fits perfectly over the triple letter and double word squares." Coach: "Julie, that's not what qualifies a word. It has to mean something." Julie: "It does. It means 'I win' in Scotland."
Our trip started off well, however the van taking us to the airport did not start off well. In fact, it did not start at all! A dead battery was the culprit. Being the resourceful group we are, we found a way to get to the airport. Arriving in Atlanta, we began our trek to Troy State. We checked in the hotel and went to the field for a light practice to stretch our legs and walk through some scenarios. From practice we went to dinner at a local restaurant in Troy. After a good nights sleep, we were ready to play.
This was going to be an interesting day because it was the battle of sisters. Brandi Herrmann, a sophomore for the Owls, was set to match up with her sister Brittany, a freshman for Troy State. Their parents were at the game with custom made shirts that were half Troy and half FAU. Trina Maso De Moya put a goal in and we were 1-0 at half. A few adjustments and a serious attitude in the second half put us over the top and we ended up with a 5-0 win. Danielle Dileo scored her first collegiate goal as well. The Herrmann's were proud and both their girls played very well. I am sure it wasn't easy dealing with sisters playing against each other. I think that was the first time I have been involved in a game like that. After the game we loaded up and started our drive to Macon for our Sunday game vs. Mercer.
A much-needed day off allowed for the girls to rest, relax and study. With all the trips, it has been difficult for the girls to keep up with the demands in the classroom. As I have said many times before, we ask so much of these kids. We went to a movie after dinner. The consensus was to see Knockaround Guys. I wouldn't rate it in my top ten movies, but it was OK. The girls were just happy that the "hot" guy didn't get killed in the end. It seems that young ladies can be as superficial as young men!
Game time for Mercer and you could feel that something was in the air. Our team was relaxed and prepared to play. We talked about raising our level and demanding our best performance for each and every game. We started on fire with a great goal from Trina on an assist from Julie Ferguson. We did not know it at the time, but this was going to be a record day. Our speed of play was outrageous and our attacking mentality took over. It was 4-0 at the half and ended up 7-0. Our two forwards, Julie and Trina, would account for all of the goals. Trina dropped in three all on assists from Julie. Julie scored the other four goals. It was an amazing day for her. She set a new record for goals in a game, points in a game and assists in a season. She can make up all the words she wants as long as she plays like that! We are starting to find a nice comfort zone with those two up top. Defensively we were solid and we were able to move the ball around effectively.
We are finally home for a nice stretch. We have five home games in a row and these games will determine our place for the conference tournament. Only six teams qualify and everyone is fighting for the #1 or #2 seed because you get a first round bye. It will be a competitive run of games with Stetson, Samford, Jacksonville State, Jacksonville and Miami. The challenge is right in front of us. We will take it head on. Having said that, I can't wait for tomorrow.
