BOCA RATON, FL -
A tournament in Hawaii and a re-configured conference schedule highlight the 2001-02 Florida Atlantic University women's basketball schedule, released Wednesday. The Lady Owls will play 28 regular season games, 20 of which will be Atlantic Sun Conference games. In all, they will face five opponents with at least 20 victories a year ago.
FAU will travel over 5,000 miles to open its season November 23 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, HI. The team's first round opponent will be Penn State, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament last March. Hawaii, Minnesota, Montana, Stanford, Weber State, and Wyoming round out the field. Hawaii and Montana each had over 20 wins in 2000-01. The tournament continues with games on November 24 and 25.
Once the Lady Owls return, they will not leave the South Florida area until January as they play six of their next seven games at FAU Gymnasium. The stretch begins with their home opener December 1 against A-Sun rival Samford followed by Jacksonville State on December 3. They will also host non-conference foes Eastern Kentucky, Miami (FL), South Florida, and Savannah State. The only road game in December has Florida Atlantic traveling to Miami to take on Florida International on December 18. Both Eastern Kentucky and Florida International will be part a 16-team field in this season's Preseason WNIT. The EKU game will also feature FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan facing her alma mater.
Beginning January 3, FAU's final 18 games will be against A-Sun (formerly the Trans America Athletic Conference) competition. That includes two contests against Belmont, which joins the 11-member conference this season.
"Starting off with Penn State and the rest of a highly competitive field in Hawaii helps make this the most aggressive schedule we've had since I've been here," said Dugan, who enters her third season at FAU. "This is the kind of schedule that we hope will not only make us competitive within our conference, but also nationally."
In all, FAU will face teams from the Big Ten, Big East, Ohio Valley, and Sun Belt Conferences as well as Conference-USA.
