Florida Atlantic University's men's and women's swim teams took part in the National Independent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships over the weekend in Rochester, Michigan. The three-day event, which took place at FAU in 2000, was hosted by Oakland University.
In the final meet of the season, the women were able to muster up a fifth place finish in an eight team field, while the men placed sixth out of seven.
On the men's side, two new conference teams, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University proved to be strong contenders. Southern Methodist University swept the meet, winning by a decisive lead over second place University of Cincinnati. Southern Methodist finished fourth right behind the host school, Oakland University. Brett Lummis led the way for the Owls with two fifth place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:50.73 and a time of 1:50.71 in the 200-yard backstroke. Lummis was able to pick up a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.99. Travis Howard was also able to break in to the top-five in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.17. Matt Streicher helped FAU's cause with two second place finishes in both one and three-meter diving, and third in platform diving.
The women's events were more evenly matched. University of Cincinnati won the meet totaling 74 points more than Oakland University. The Lady Owls had several key contenders in the meet with 10 top-five finishers. Emma Petersson, Andrea Van Der Plaats, Tessa Solomon, and Brie Kelly pulled off two top-five finishes apiece. Van Der Plaats, FAU's distance specialist, finished third in the 1650-yard freestyle, 16:53.40, and 500-yard freestyle, 4:54.99. Solomon produced a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke .09 seconds ahead of fellow teammate Kelly Pancake with a time of 58.00. A fourth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle rounded out the Sophomore season for Solomon. Emma Petersson finished in the silver position in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:05.64 and also earned a fifth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior, Brie Kelly collected fourth place finishes in the 400-yard individual medly and 200-yard butterfly with times of 4:31.59 and 2:06.52, respectively.
The conference meet concludes the collegiate season for Florida Atlantic University. The athletes will continue to compete in the off-season on their own in USS meets.
