Tamala Vaughn was awarded a basketball prior to Thursday night's game for surpassing the 500-mark for career rebounds. From the moment she stepped onto the court to receive the ball, she controlled the game in Florida Atlantic University's 79-60 victory over Trans America Athletic Conference opponent Jacksonville State University.
The win was the fourth for FAU in its last six games and fourth straight victory at FAU Gymnasium.
The victory improved FAU's record to 8-18 (5-12 TAAC) while JSU fell to 9-17 (6-11 TAAC). The victory, more importantly pulled FAU to within one game of JSU in the standings as the Lady Owls battle for positioning in next week's TAAC Tournament in Orlando.
FAU took control early, but found themselves down 33-31 at the half. The Lady Owls returned to the court outscoring the Lady Gamecocks 48-27 in the second period.
Vaughn scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while leading the charge. Following the senior's efforts were fellow senior Ruta Griniute who also added 12. LaTorria Mathews was one of four FAU players to score 11 points. She also had a trio of three-pointers, bringing her to within three treys of setting the senior record for threes in a season. It's a mark she holds as a freshman, sophomore, and junior as well.
The victory also featured career-highs by Sumika Alexander and Jameka King as the freshmen scored 11 points apiece. Kristy Halvorsen was the sixth Lady Owl in double figures with 11.
JSU was led by Amanda Tyus who scored a game-high 26 points and had seven rebounds.
FAU will next host Samford Saturday afternoon to end the regular season. LaTorria Matthews, Tamala Vaughn, and Ruta Griniute will be honored prior to the game as part of senior day.
