Boca Raton, FL -
, Florida Atlantic University's women's basketball team (3-4) posted their third win of the season with a 93-84 win over the University of South Florida (1-4), Tuesday night.
"Tammy (Vaughn) was consistent throughout the game," said Chancellor Dugan, FAU's head coach. "Tammy played well. When we play defense as well as we did we will shoot the ball well."
Offensively, the Lady Owls were lead by Tamala Vaughn, who scored 22 points. Defensively, Kristy Halvorsen and LaTorria Matthews pulled down seven rebounds each. Aiya Shepard scored a career high 32 points for the Lady Bulls.
FAU continuously substituted in fresh players in order to press the Lady Bulls, which increased pressure and created turnovers both leading to points at the other end. Coach Dugan didn't have the intensity that she wanted at the beginning of the game. She began substituting right away. The increased intensity helped FAU play better defense which in turn led to better shooting. The Lady Owls shot 44% from the three-point line. Matthews was five of seven, all three pointers, in the second half for 17 points.
USF led during most of the game until Kristy Halvorsen made a free throw to complete a three-point play with 11:38 left in the second half, 55-54. FAU continued to press and create shots.
"A win from Conference USA is huge," added Dugan. "USA is a top-six conference and they have beaten Central Florida this season, a team we will face later in our conference."
The Lady Owls will next play host 3 pm this Saturday versus Georgia Southern.
