TROY, AL -
Jeff Cowans made a school-record eight three-pointers and scored 30 points to lead Florida Atlantic University to an upset victory over Trans America Athletic Conference foe Troy State University 85-82 Saturday night in Troy, AL. The win improved FAU to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in TAAC play. Raheim Brown had 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jeff Hamilton also finished in double-figures with 13 points.
FAU controlled the game from the beginning as they scored 52 points in the first half with a 52-40 lead at the break. Cowans scored 23 in the first half alone as FAU built as much as a 16-point lead.
In the second half, the Trojans battled back, and with 48 seconds remaining, tied the game 82-82 on Robert Rushing's three-pointer. With 13 seconds left, Brown scored what turned out to be the winning basket to give the Owls an 84-82 lead. Robert Williams added a free throw with 7 seconds left to make it 85-82. TSU's Donnie Pemberton missed a three-pointer with two seconds remaining that would have tied the game.
"Words can't describe the way I feel for our kids," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "This was a total team effort tonight, and it's a big win for the school and for our program."
Cowans, a freshman from Orlando, FL, broke the single-game record for threes previously shared by four players with six in a contest. Cowans' 30 points were the most for an FAU player since Damon Arnette scored 30 against Mercer University on February 6, 1999.
For the game, FAU shot 49-percent, including 45-percent (14-of-31) from beyond the arc. TSU shot 45-percent. The Owls also outrebounded the Trojans 44-30.
The victory for FAU snapped a 20-game regular season conference losing streak and a 23-game conference regular season road losing streak dating back to January 15, 1998.
The Owls next play at Virginia Commonwealth December 9.
