BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic University fell short in its bid for its first NCAA Tournament appearance with a 2-1 loss to Jacksonville University Saturday in the final of the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship in Boca Raton, FL. JU erased a 1-0 second half deficit to claim its first TAAC Tournament championship.
Both teams fought to a scoreless first half as JU edged FAU 6-5 in shots in the first frame. FAU broke through first with a goal by Lisanne Peart 11:23 into the second half. Melissa Bobby got the assist on the score that put FAU on top 1-0.
FAU was able to hang on to the advantage for nearly 16 minutes before JU's Trine Riis Groven tied the match with a goal at 72:05. The Dolphins took their first lead of the match at 76:01 when Karen Novak scored on a corner kick by Marit Foss. Two attempts to tie the match in the final minute by FAU came up short as JU hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Bobby's assist enabled the senior to finish her career as the all-time points leader with 60. She was also named to the all-tournament team along with teammates Peart, Kmiotek, and Rhonda Jones.
The loss ends a record-setting season for FAU as the team won a program-best 14 games while advancing to the final of the TAAC Championship for the first time.
"I was very much impressed with how these kids responded to the situation," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley on his team playing its third match in three days. "They acted like they had been here before. They acted like they belonged. They forced the issue, they battled for everything, and they represented the program incredibly."
Overall, Dooley called this season "absolutely the most gratifying year I' ve ever had as a coach."
