Fatigue and height proved to be the deciding factors in Florida Atlantic University's 15-10, 14-16, 15-7, 15-3 loss to top seed Georgia State University, in the semifinal match of the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament.
FAU played the first match of the day and enjoyed a semi-healthy line-up for the first time in recent weeks. However, the Owls succumbed to a lack of quality practice time due to injuries along with a GSU line-up that included three starters over six feet tall, including 6-foot 3-inch outside hitter Anna Popenko, who tallied a tournament-high 26 kills and two block assists. Popenko's match attack percentage was an impressive .479. GSU's offense was led by Mary Hyland who tallied 54 assists.
FAU played a close match including taking game two 16-14. The Lady Owls were led by Ashley Bodily who tallied 23 kills and 22 digs. Senior Lori Lombard earned 20 kills and Gracie Heim ended the match with 10. Stacey Carlson, who along with Lombard, played in her final match of their collegiate careers, had a match-high 59 assists.
GSU, which improved to 27-9, will advance to the championship match, schedule for noon, Saturday and will face the winner of the University of Central.
FAU concluded its 2000 season with a 10-20 record and a fourth place finish in the league.
