BOCA RATON, FL -
Six years ago, softball did not exist at Florida Atlantic University. Since then, FAU has built one of the strongest softball programs in the nation. Last year continued a trend of continued success as FAU captured its fourth consecutive Trans America Athletic Conference championship and advanced to its second NCAA Tournament in as many years. The team has progressively won more games since its inception in 1995, and under the guidance of the legendary Joan Joyce, the team is primed for the same as the 2001 season approaches.
Last season was a record-setting year for FAU. The team won 57 games against just 17 losses. Of those 57 victories, a staggering 29 were shutouts. That led the TAAC, while the staff dominated the TAAC and most of its other competition. What's even more impressive is the fact FAU returns every member of last year's rotation, including Nicole Myers, the 2000 TAAC Player-of-the-Year. The junior returns after a 2000 season that saw her go 22-6 with a 0.81 ERA. In the process, she had four no-hitters, including two in back-to-back starts. She led the TAAC in victories, ERA, and strikeouts (309). She is 46-16 in her first two seasons at FAU. At the plate, Myers led the team in batting average and homers.
The Lady Owls begin their quest for a fifth-straight TAAC championship when they open their 2001 season February 2 at the USF "Louisville Slugger" Tournament. The team's first home game will be February 22 against Hofstra.
