BOCA RATON, FL -
The Florida Atlantic University football team continued its inaugural season of intrasquad scrimmages Saturday morning at the Tom Oxley Practice Field in Boca Raton. For the second straight week, the defense defeated the offense, this time 35-24, in a format that rewards touchdowns, turnovers, and stopping the offense on downs.
In all, the players went through 101 plays in what was FAU's third scrimmage of the season. "I wasn't nearly as happy as I'd like to have been out here today," said FAU head coach Howard Schnellenberger. "I was kind of thrilled for the defense, although I don't know that they played that well, but they won the game."
After being stopped on its first series, the offense scored on a 10-play drive capped off by a 7-yard run by Doug Parker (Delray Beach/Atlantic HS).
Trailing 6-1, the defense scored the next 18 points to take a 19-6 lead and, in the process, forcing five turnovers in eight series.
Later in the contest, the offense regained the lead 24-23 on a 13-yard option touchdown pass by Parker to Shaun Thompson (Sunrise/Plantation HS).
The defense scored the final 12 points, including an interception in the endzone by Todd Hamilton (Cooper City/St. Thomas Aquinas HS).
Also catching touchdown passes were Ben Coker (Vineland, NJ) and Stanley Latortue(Boynton Beach/Forest Hill HS).
"They need to focus back on the fact that they aren't going to play another football team each Saturday and that scrimmaging ourselves has to take the place of that," said Schnellenberger. "We have to generate the same kind of enthusiasm if at all possible."
Parker led the rushing attack with 55 yards on eight carries. Dekolan James Miami/Carol City HS) had 42 yards on seven carries.
FAU quarterbacks completed 18 passes to 14 different receivers. Eddie Dunbar (Pompano/Northeast HS) led the team in receptions with three. Latortue led the Owls with 32 receiving yards, all coming on the touchdown reception from Blake Thames (West Palm Beach/Forest Hill HS). Thames finished 4-7 for 65 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in four series. Mario Fernandez (Hialeah/Hialeah HS) went 7-14 for 52 yards and an interception in five series.
The Owls will take Sunday off before resuming practice Monday afternoon.
