A tight match and shifts in momentum between two teams vying for one of the final Trans America Athletic Conference volleyball championship spots saw Florida Atlantic University pull away with a 10-15, 15-13, 15-13, 15-13 victory, Thursday night. FAU improved to 8-15 overall and 4-3 in TAAC play while Samford fell 11-13 and 2-3 in the TAAC.
Samford took the first game, in the best of five match, by keeping FAU's defense out of sync. The Lady Owls won all the big points in the next three games to win each at 15 and by the mandated two point margin.
Stacey Carlson, who took over quarterback duties mid-season due to injuries to both Jyoti Mau and Danyiell Smith, tallied a career high 73 assists. She saw four teammates earn double- digit kills. Fellow senior, Lori Lombard had a match high 24. Gracie Heim had 23 while both Ashley Bodily and Jessica Kahn added 17.
Defensively, Lombard had 23 digs and received most of Samford's serves. Bodily had 13, while Heim and Kari Dailey touched in for 11 and 10, respectively.
Samford was led by Whitney Miller who had 23 kills and 18 digs, both team highs. Setting duties were split between Krista Kettering and Colleen Donivan.
FAU will next plays host to Jacksonville, 7 pm, October 27.
