Play at the Plate Allows Baseball to Hang on for 3-2 Win

April 14, 2018

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University recorded their ninth straight victory, cutting down what would have been the tying run by UTSA at home for the game's final out in a 3-2 Saturday night win at FAU Baseball Stadium.

"Exciting ending," said Head Coach John McCormack. "I thought (Vince) Coletti was really good, turned it over to Zach (Schneider) and he did his job, we should have been out of that, a dropped third strike and error in the field. Zach is not a strikeout guy, and the more opportunities you give an opponent, the worse it is for him. David (Miranda) made a wonderful play to cut it off, then the relay, then (Kevin Abraham) held on to the ball at home."

The Turning Point

Vince Coletti threw eight shutout innings, his longest start for FAU (26-8, 11-3 Conference USA), and to that point, the only offense of the game was a Cody Wilson two-run opposite field home run in the fifth. A big third run came across in the home eighth, when Eric Rivera had an RBI single up the middle to score David Miranda.

The Finish

With two outs in the top of the ninth, two runners on and two outs, a fielding error extended the inning with the first UTSA (17-16, 6-7 C-USA) run scoring. Closer Zach Schneider then allowed a double to right field, but David Miranda cut the ball off before it reached the fence. As another run scored to make it 3-2, Miranda's relay was perfect to Tyler Frank, and the UTSA runner coming around from first was sent to the plate. Frank then threw a strike to home, with Kevin Abraham applying the tag to end the ballgame.

The Bats

  • Wilson also added two singles for a 3-for-3 game, and earned his fifth stolen base of the year. He matched Frank for the team high with his eighth homer
  • The sophomore centerfielder has an eight-game hitting streak, Pedro Pages is up to seven, and Frank has reached in 29 consecutive contests
  • Miranda had two hits, both off lefthanded pitching, as well as a walk

The Arms

  • Coletti scattered six hits in eight innings. He walked none, struck out three, and threw an even 100 pitches to even his season mark at 2-2
  • Both of the runs against Schneider were unearned. His conference-leading save total is now 11
