FAU Falls at Charlotte in Regular Season Finale

CHARLOTTE, N.C. â€" The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team rallied in the second half against Charlotte, but were unable to make the comeback falling, 83-69, in the final game of the regular season.


FAU (13-14, 7-9 C-USA) clawed back get within six points of Charlotte (14-15, 10-6 C-USA) after falling behind by 24 points early in the third quarter, but were not able to complete the rally.

The game started back and forth between the two teams, but Charlotte used a 6-0 run to build a lead midway through the quarter. From there the 49ers outscored FAU, 12-9, in the frame.

Leading by seven, Charlotte used the second period to increase their lead to lead by 21 at the end of the half. The 49ers shot 62.5 percent from the field during the second quarter while the Owls went cold, shooting only 27.8 percent.

Charlotte went ahead by 24 before FAU made their push. Malia Kency was fouled on a made three-point shot, making her free throw shot to convert a four-point opportunity. Jamaria Williams followed that play up with a three to cut the lead to 17. A Danneal Ford and-one and a 6-0 run by the Owls had them within 13.

FAU came out in the fourth quarter and traded baskets to fluctuate the lead from 13 to 10 points. At the 6:39 mark, Raven Doyle made a layup, was fouled and made her free throw to cut the lead to single digits. After a defensive stop, Ford connected on a three to bring the Owls within six. From there Charlotte was able to capitalize on a FAU foul and three straight turnovers from the Owls to push back ahead and win the game, 83-69.


Raven Doyle recorded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Doyle has had double digit rebounds in four of the last five games, averaging 12.2 boards in that span.

Malia Kency led the team in scoring with 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three point range. In the last two games, the senior has made 10 threes.

Danneal Ford had 12 points, six assists and two rebounds. Her 129 assists this season is the fifth most in a single season in FAU history.


The Owls will travel to Frisco, Texas to participate in the Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday.
