2017 Women's Soccer Schedule
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The 2017 schedule for the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team has been released in full, and it includes 10 home matches as well as the hosting of the 2017 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship.
"We are excited for the upcoming fall season," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "It will be filled with many challenges, but we are definitely going into the season with some high expectations. We are returning a pretty good team that was youthful last year and grew in stature and confidence over the fall and spring seasons. Six of our regular starters were freshmen and they will hopefully return as seasoned sophomores. We also have some big shoes to fill with the loss of six tremendous seniors, of which Erica Burt, Sydney Drinkwater and Sammy Rowland were All-C-USA and NSCAA All-Region players in 2016."
In addition to the previously-announced home opener on August 18 versus Florida at FAU Stadium (http://www.fausports.com/sports/w-soccer/spec-rel/071917aaa.html), the next three matches for the squad will also be at home. The Owls will play host to Saint Francis at FAU Soccer Stadium on Aug. 20, and the following weekend is the FAU Adidas Owl Classic. Coming in to compete will be Eastern Michigan (Aug. 25) and Valparaiso (Aug. 27).
After a trip across the state to Fort Myers for two contests at Florida Gulf Coast - against Liberty (Sept. 1) and Kent State (Sept. 3) - the Owls leave the Sunshine State for the first time when they travel to Rochester, Michigan to take on Oakland on Sept. 7.
"We have a very competitive non-conference schedule with many challenges in and out of the state of Florida," said Baker. "Ultimately, the non-conference must prepare us for C-USA competition, and I think our opponents will definitely do that this fall."
A quick return home for the final non-conference match of the year at FAU Soccer Stadium (Sept. 10 vs. College of Charleston) precedes the C-USA opener, on the road at Rice on Sept. 15. The team also travels further west that weekend, to Cedar City, Utah, matching up against Southern Utah two days later.
The 2017 C-USA home opener is Friday, Sept. 22, versus Old Dominion. Next are three straight league matchups at home (Middle Tennessee, UAB and Southern Mississippi), followed by three in a row on the road (Charlotte, Western Kentucky and Marshall). The slate ends with the final home regular season match of the year, against UTEP on Oct. 22, and a short road trip south to close out, at FIU on Oct. 27.
The C-USA Women's Soccer Championship is scheduled for Nov. 1-5 at FAU Soccer Stadium. More information will be available closer to the start of the event.
"The C-USA schedule will be tough again with so many games decided by the smallest of margins," said Baker. "Hosting the 2017 C-USA Tournament in November is exciting and we are looking forward to that event again this year. Our 2017 recruiting class is highly touted and we will have some newcomers that can impact our team and conference immediately. The young ladies are hoping to build and improve upon what has been back-to-back successful seasons, and this could be another historic year."
