Baseball Leaves Sunshine State for First Time in 2017 to Take on UAB

March 23, 2017

BOCA RATON, Fla. - After 21 games, 18 at home and three within the state, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team leaves Florida for their first road trip of distance this weekend, a Conference USA series at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama.

(Forecasted weather has already changed game days and times.)

The Owls (14-6-1, 3-0 C-USA) were toppled Wednesday at Miami, 7-5, but have still won nine of their last 11 dating back to March 5. To start the league slate last weekend, they sandwiched two one-run wins around a 10-1 decision against Middle Tennessee at home.

Due to expected inclement weather, originally scheduled game times have already been moved around. Instead of Friday and Saturday, the first two games will now be a Friday doubleheader. The finale is still currently scheduled for Sunday, but game officials are monitoring the situation.

Here are the updated weekend game times and free FAU radio links:

UAB (13-8, 2-1 C-USA) went on the road opening weekend, falling in the opener to WKU before winning the last two. On Tuesday, at home against Alabama, the Blazers lost 4-1. Most recently, the team is 2-3 after a brief five-game winning streak the middle of this month.

The team's top hitter is Brewer Hicklen, who shared Week 4 C-USA Hitter of the Week honors with FAU's Gary Mattis. The redshirt sophomore outfielder is batting .347, with four doubles, a league-leading five triples, and all three of UAB's home runs. He ties for the Blazers' lead in RBI with Carter Pharis, each knocking in 11, while Stephen Dobbs has 10.

Senior lefthander Thomas Lowery won the most recent C-USA Pitcher of the Week award, pitching a complete game one-hitter Sunday against WKU. On the season, he is 1-1 with a 2.22 ERA. The only starter announced for the Blazers so far this weekend is Whitlock, a sophomore righthander, in game one.

The Owls swept UAB in Boca Raton last season, with winning scores of 5-3, 7-3 and 5-0, taking a 7-4 all-time advantage in the series. Next week, FAU won't have a midweek game, hosting Rice next for a weekend series. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit
