EL PASO, Texas â€" Fifteen first-half turnovers put the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team in a hole early as (RV) UTEP took advantage to defeat the Owls 75-47 on Saturday in the Conference USA matchup.
"I thought we were good in our half-court defense when we weren't chasing people after turnovers," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We got a little scared with the basketball and it just went downhill from there."
The Owls (11-13, 3-10 C-USA) committed a season-high 23 turnovers and 27 fouls while shooting 31.5 percent from the field. Kat Wright paced FAU with 15 points while Morgan Robinson tallied ten. Freshman Ra'Kyra Gabriel posted seven points and seven rebounds.
UTEP (21-2, 12-1 C-USA) started the contest on a 12-2 run before the Owls came back to cut the lead to 14-13. The Miners held on and extended the advantage to 22-17 at the first break.
After a Robinson jumper cut the lead back to three, UTEP went on a 15-2 run, with 12 of those points coming off of turnovers, to go up by as many as 16 as FAU went 0-8 from the three-point line in the quarter.
The Owls were held to two baskets in the third quarter, being held scoreless from the field for 8:42 while UTEP went on a 16-0 run to go up 54-25. A jumper with 22 seconds left in the frame gave the Miners a 59-30 advantage at the final intermission.
Wright snapped a streak of 15 consecutive missed threes by FAU with her first of the game at the 6:10 mark of the fourth, but the Owls couldn't get closer than 26 as UTEP held on for its 14th consecutive home victory.
