BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" Ali Gorrell's third consecutive double-double propelled the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team to a 64-51 Conference USA victory over UTSA on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak for the Owls (11-7, 3-4 C-USA).
FAU made ten three-pointers on the evening as Gorrell posted 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kat Wright scored 13 while Morgan Robinson tallied 12 points. The Owls earned 19 points off of 19 UTSA turnovers and pieced together 14 second-chance points on nine offensive rebounds.
The Owls started strong as Wright scored six of the team's first eight points to put FAU on top by as many as a five before a near-ten minute scoreless streak allowed the Roadrunners (6-11, 2-5 C-USA) to come back to take a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
Robinson scored the first two baskets of the second quarter, but not before UTSA built a seven point lead with four minutes remaining in the half. FAU retook the lead with 14 seconds left, but UTSA's Mathilde Hergott made a three at the five-second mark to put the Roadrunners up 24-22 at the break.
Sophomore Malia Kency hit back-to-back three-pointers late in the third to spark a 15-2 run for the Owls, who led 43-34 at the end of the third. Gorrell scored nine of her 14 in the fourth quarter while the defense never allowed UTSA to get closer than nine points.
FAU goes on the road to take on Old Dominion and Charlotte on Jan. 28 and 30, respectively. Live audio is available on FAUSports.com.
