BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University track and field team took home two first place finishes and earned five all-time top-10 finishes at the Art and Linda Maillet UNC Open, on Saturday.
Sitia Martinez captured the 60m dash (7.61), a new personal record and earned the third fastest spot in FAU history. Regina Wilkerson finished second (7.76) and freshman Jada Massie took home third in (7.76), a new personal record. Crystal McDougle ran a 7.89.
In the 60m hurdles, McDougle finished first for FAU and seventh in the event with a new personal best (8.97). Senior Ashley Stewart finished second for the Owls (9.64). Elliot ran the 200m in 00:26.37 with teammates Massie just after with a time of 00:26.60 and Trader ran a 00:27.50.
In the 400m, junior Deja Jones finished second overall (58.28), with Berneta Boldin (1:00.52) and Sherline Valentine (1:00.88) just after.
On the distance side, Bethany Hardcastle ran a new personal record in the mile (5:19.64), teammate Erica Lersch ran a 5:39.20 and sophomore Cary Fontanez finished the 800m in 2:23.92.
In the 5000m, FAU took home three new personal records; senior Clare Brinkman won the event with a time of 18:20.09 and senior Kia Heller-Spencer took second (18:31.37) marking the ninth and 10th fastest times in FAU history. Sophomore Christina Schultz also recorded a new personal record (18:31.66).
"The first meet of the season is always hard because you never know what to expect," said senior Clare Brinkman. "Being able to run a new personal record for the first meet is rewarding, knowing that the hard work has paid off."
Sophomore Elizabeth Wellman took home a first place finish in the women's 3000m (10.30.04) while Brinkman finished second for FAU (10:50.52). Schultz earned another personal best (10:55.79) and freshman Hardcastle ran a personal best (10:51.57) and Heller-Spencer finishing fourth for FAU (10:58.03).
Mar'Rhea Everheart took second in long jump and marking the second best jump in FAU history (5.60m). Stewart took seventh in high jump (1.5m).
To close out the meet, the team of Martinez, Wilkerson, Valentine and Jones took second in the 4x400m relay with a final time of 3:52.80.
The team's next meet will be the Emory Invitational on Sunday Jan. 24 in Birmingham, Ala.
