May 18, 2015 BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Track and field's Frida Thorsås and baseball's Brendon Sanger have been chosen as FAU Players of the Week after both had record-breaking performances over the weekend.
On Friday, Thorsås became the Owls' first Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field champion since the institution joined the league in 2013. The freshman claimed victory in the heptathlon with a point total of 5,396, setting a school record that she broke earlier this season at the University of Miami Alumni Invitational. This is Thorsås' second conference championship title this year after she won the pentathlon at the C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in February. This also is the second outdoor school record she has broken and the fourth overall this season.
Sanger became the all-time leader in triples at FAU with two last week, giving him 10 in his career. On Thursday, Sanger's triple helped FAU double its previous record and tie the C-USA record as the Owls hit four in the 13-2 win over WKU. The Owls also broke the school single-season team record with 21 triples. Sanger drew his 49th walk and scored his 49th run of the year. The junior has now reached base safely in 58 of FAU's last 60 games. He reached base 10 times over the three games, slugging 1.100 with an average of .600.
Baseball will be the No. 2 seed at its first ever C-USA Tournament, which will begin on Wednesday, May 20 as the Owls take on Old Dominion at 5 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss. Live stats and free audio of each game will be provided on FAUSports.com. Track and field finished the outdoor season by capturing conference championship titles in the heptathlon and 400 meter hurdles. The cross country season will begin in fall 2015.
