Florida Atlantic University softball (16-3) saw their bats heat up in the team's 9-3 win over Ball State University on Sunday.
"After two tough games yesterday, we came out today and competed against a really good team and came out a winner," said Joan Joyce, head coach. "Kylee (Hanson) pitched a good game and Amanda (Wilson) was able to come in and close it down."
As a team, FAU had 11 hits from seven players with seniors Lindsey Shell and Laura Mann leading the way going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 with three RBI, respectively. Freshman catcher Alex Miller and veteran Carnesha Thompson were hot as well with two hits apiece. Kylee Hanson stayed tough in the circle getting two strikeouts and giving up six hits. Amanda Wilson took over in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game.
The Cardinals would strike first with one run off two hits in the bottom of the second. The Owls would tie it up in the top of the third. Miller began the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Delaney Rickey sacrifice bunt. Shell's single would move Miller to third and she would go on to score on a throwing error by Ball State's second baseman.
FAU put up one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Ball State would score one in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-2 going into the seventh. The fourth saw a double from Thompson and single from Mann to score Lochten. Miller doubled to right center, Shell got her second single of the day, and Miller would score on a pop fly to shortstop in the fifth. With two outs and two on in the top of the sixth, Tatum Buckley hits a ball through the left side to score Lochten.
The Owls' bats were on fire in the seventh to help secure the win. Miller and Rickey both struck out swinging but reached on wild pitches. With the bases loaded, freshman Kiley Southall singled up the middle to score Miller and Rickey. Mann would follow with a hit to score Southall and Christina Martinez who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Mickey Bell gets a hit to right center to score Lochten, the final FAU run, who had previously reached on a fielding error.
The Owls will host the Parents' Weekend Tournament on March 6-8 featuring Bethune-Cookman, Memphis, Florida State, Hofstra and Coastal Carolina. FAU will begin with a doubleheader on Friday, March 6 starting with Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. and ending the night with Memphis at 8:15 p.m. Live stats will be available on Gametracker via fausports.com or you can catch all the action on Twitter by following @fauowlssoftball.
