BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University head softball coach Joan Joyce earned her 800th career victory with a 18-0 win over Florida A&M on Friday night.
The Owls (11-1) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. A Rattler error allowed Lindsey Shell to score the first run of the game. RBIs by Emily Lochten and Melissa Martinez pushed the frame's other two runs across the plate.
FAU broke the game open in the third inning with six runs. Melissa Martinez's third homerun of the season drove in her twin sister Christina and Lochten to make the score 6-0. Later in the inning, Delaney Rickey doubled in Laura Mann before Rickey and Alex Miller scored on Shell's single.
Nine more runs in the fourth inning provided the final margin of victory. Samantha Messer threw a complete game three-hitter. The 18 runs are the second most in school history, second only to the 20 runs scored in the 13th game of the program's existence. FAU defeated Princeton 5-0 in the nightcap. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Lochten scored on a Melissa Martinez triple. Martinez later scored on a Miller infield single. Melissa Martinez drove in another run in the fifth when she was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Alert base running accounted for the final tally when both Miller and Kiley Southall scored on a fielder's choice. Tatum Buckley threw a one-hitter in the circle for the Owls.
FAU will play Albany in its first game on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Live stats will be available on fausports.com and updates will be available at twitter.com/fauowlssoftball.
