BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" A 26-6 second quarter in favor of the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team propelled the Owls (7-3) to an 82-60 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the opener of the FAU Holiday Tournament Tuesday night.
Junior Kat Wright buried four three-pointers while senior Morgan Robinson made three as the duo paced the Owls with 15 points each. Senior Ali Gorrell tallied nine points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks. FAU made 15 three-pointers â€" the second-most in program history. Freshman Ra'Kyra Gabriel posted a career-high nine rebounds and scored seven points.
Following an early 7-7 tie, FAU went on a 14-0 run, holding BC (6-7) without a basket for 6:30 to close the first quarter up 21-11.
The second quarter saw more of the same as the Owls opened the frame on an 11-0 run and extended it to 23-3 in the final minute. Wright made FAU's ninth three-pointer of the first half with 15 seconds remaining to put the Owls up 47-17 at the break.
The Wildcats would rally back in the third quarter to out-score the Owls 29-24 with the help of five three-pointers and 10 free throws, but FAU's lead remained strong at 71-46.
The BC defense posted its best frame in the fourth quarter, not allowing any FAU players to score multiple baskets. The Wildcats again out-scored the Owls 14-11, but couldn't overcome the deficit as FAU held on for the 82-60 win.
