Track & Field to Compete at Jimmy Carnes Invitational

The Florida Atlantic University women's track and field team will head to Gainesville, Fla. to take part in the 8th Annual Jimmy Carnes Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Friday, Jan. 23.

Event information: The meet will be held at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center located on the University of Florida's campus. The first event of the day will be the women's pentathlon, which will begin at 9 a.m. Teams competing include Flagler, Embry-Riddle, North Florida, Northwood, Webber International, Bethune-Cookman, and many more.

Previous meet: The team earned three first place finishes and set nine school records at the Art and Linda Maillet UNC Open last Saturday. Regina Wilkerson took home first place in the 60m dash (7.62) and beat the school record with a preliminary time of 7.60. The sophomore currently holds the third best time in this event in Conference USA.

Freshman Liz Wellman placed first in the one mile with a time of 5:05.20, which puts her in sixth in this event on FAU's All-Time Top 10 List. Wellman currently holds the third best time in the one mile in the conference. Australian transfer Sophie Walker claimed first in the 3000m with a final time of 10:20.03, which also ranks her sixth all-time in FAU history and fifth in the conference.

In the 400m dash, sophomore Deja Jones earned second in 57.41 followed by Sitia Martinez in third with a time of 58.32. Jones' time is fourth on FAU's All-Time Top 10 List and third in C-USA. Junior Ashley Stewart was the Owls' top finisher in the 60m hurdles coming in third in 8.88, marking the sixth best time in FAU history.

History: FAU opened the 2014 indoor season at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational. The 4x400m relay team took first-place honors and was ranked sixth in the conference with a final time of 3:54.45. The team consisted of former runners Tanisha Coppin and Danielle Aromashodu as well as current team members Deja Jones and Sitia Martinez.

Chloe Sell was FAU's top finisher in the one mile recording a final time of 5:21.33 for 12th-place. Returners Kia Heller-Spencer and Tara Cripe finished the event in 14th and 15th-place, respectively. Sell also took FAU's top finish in the 3000 meter with a final time of 10:30.02 for sixth-place.

Next meet: The Owls will travel to Akron, Ohio to participate in the Akron Invitational on Feb. 6-7.
