BOCA RATON, Fla. - A clutch three-pointer by Jackson Trapp was the difference in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team's 69-66 win over Eastern Kentucky on Monday night.
The Owls (6-4) led by three with less than 30 seconds to go when Javier Lacunza swung the ball to Trapp, who hit his sixth three-pointer of the night. Even after the basket, EKU (6-5) had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but a last second heave was off the mark, giving the Owls their fifth win in their last six games.
The game was a back and forth affair, with neither team holding a lead bigger than eight points the entire night. While the Colonels used their pressing defense to force 21 turnovers, the Owls were able to exploit openings for 11 made three-pointers and a 35-19 rebound advantage.
Trapp led all scorers with 19, while Marquan Botley added 15 and C. J. Turman chipped in with 12. Kelvin Penn had eight points and a career high 14 rebounds. FAU starts the season 5-0 at home for the first since the 1991-92 season.
The Owls will take some time off for Christmas before traveling to Jacksonville to face the Dolphins on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. Subscription-based live audio of the game will be available through FAUSports.com. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform.
