Myrtle Beach, SC - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team dropped its Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach Tournament opener to host Coastal Carolina University 4-1 on Friday, March 1 at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Owls fall to 5-4 on the season and will battle North Carolina State University on Saturday, March 2 at 5 p.m. The team also faces West Virginia University on Sunday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. as part of the tournament.
Coastal Carolina (4-4) took advantage of two FAU errors to grab an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A Colin Hering groundout to shortstop scored Ted Blackman for the second run of the frame.
FAU, playing its first road game of the season, scored its only run of the game in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Levi Meyer. Senior outfielder Nathan Pittman led off the inning with a triple.
Coastal Carolina got an insurance run in the fifth inning on Alex Buccilli's RBI double to plate Nick Oberg. The team got another run in the seventh inning.
Sophomore starting pitcher Austin Gomber suffered the loss, scattering five hits in seven innings. The left hander struck out five batters and allowed two earned run of the four allowed.
Freshman right hander Kyle Miller struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth inning. Offensively, sophomore third baseman Ricky Santiago had two of the team's six hits in the loss. Senior first baseman Mark Nelson, sophomore shortstop Mitch Morales, junior second baseman Sean Murrell and Pittman each added one hit.
Coastal Carolina's Tyler Poole struck out four batters in 5.1 innings to pick up the victory. Ryan Connolly picked up the save, retiring all 10 batters he faced.
