Late Miscues Cost Owls as They Lose to Troy 83-82

Feb. 25, 2012

BOCA RATON, FL - A 19-point second half lead was not enough as the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost its regular season finale to Troy 83-82 on Saturday.

Troy's first lead of the second half didn't come until Will Weathers hit all three of his free throws after being fouled while shooting a three pointer. The Owls (11-18, 7-9 Sun Belt) had a chance to win the game but the last second shot was short and the Trojans (10-17, 5-11) were able to run out the clock after grabbing the rebound.

Pablo Bertone ended the night with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists for FAU. It was his 10th double figure scoring game of the season. Greg Gantt had a season high 28, just one off of his career high, with 19 of his points coming in the second half.

After a Raymond Taylor layin put FAU ahead 63-44 with 13:42 left in the half, Troy scored the next eight points to keep the game close. Momentum switched sides several times, but the Trojans were able to hold the Owls scoreless for the final 3:15.

Shavar Richardson scored 12 points to become the 10th FAU player to score 1,000 career points. The Owls will head to Hot Springs, AR for the Sun Belt Conference basketball tournament. The Owls are projected to be the no. 8 seed and face no. 9 seed Arkansas State.
