Boca Raton, FL - The Kellie Lewis-Jay Era begins for the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball program on Friday, November 9, with a season opener at Georgia Southern University at 8:30 p.m. in Statesboro, Georgia.
Lewis-Jay is the fourth head coach in the 28-year history of the FAU program. She served as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska and University of Washington, along with being a successful high school coach, after being a standout player at Boise State University.
"We're looking forward to getting on the road to begin the season. We have had a good preseason," said Lewis-Jay. "Georgia Southern is a quality opponent. We are excited to take what we have learned on the practice floor to a game."
The Owls return two starting players from last year's team that had a 17-13 record, finished second in the Sun Belt Conference's East Division and represented the conference in the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Junior forward Chenise Miller was a preseason second-team all-conference selection after leading last year's team in scoring (10.6 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and blocked shots (24).
Florida Atlantic will have six newcomers looking to make their collegiate debuts. Those newcomers include junior-college transfers Briah Blakely, Ashley Stevenson and Shanequa Schrouder, sophomore Brianna Marsh, and freshmen Jasmine Queen and Morgan Robinson.
Lewis-Jay has already coached a winner as the team picked up a 100-61 exhibition victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday, November 3. Her squad made 13 three-point field goals in their tune up for the 2012-13 campaign.
Georgia Southern of the Southern Conference also has a new head coach, Chris Vozab, after going 8-22 last season. The Eagles return three of their top four scorers, including Meredyth Frye at 10.4 points per outing. FAU won the last meeting between the two teams, picking up a 65-61 win in Boca Raton during the 2010-11 season.
