MIAMI, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team's Sun Belt regular season title hopes were dealt a serious blow on Friday night when the Owls lost to FIU 1-0.
The Owls (31-23, 15-8 Sun Belt) and Golden Panthers (29-25, 13-10) both struggled offensively as neither team could string together enough offense to score a run. FAU's best chance to score came in the first inning, when Brittany Walker singled and stole second, before advancing to third on a Heather Barnes groundout. However, Rose Gressley grounded out to end the inning.
FIU threatened in both the fourth and fifth innings before finally breaking through in the bottom of the sixth. Brie Rojas drew a walk and Kayla Burri doubled to put runners on second and third with just one out. Alex Casals hit a liner that was just out of the reach of Heather Barnes for the only run of the game.
The Owls' are still alive for the regular season conference title, but must beat FIU on Saturday night and hope ULM can sweep three games from Louisiana. An FAU win on Saturday guarantees the Owls at least the no. 2 seed.
Saturday is Senior Night at FAU Softball Stadium as six seniors will be honored before playing their final home game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and live stats will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
