BOCA RATON, FL - Brett Royster had a double-double in his last home game as the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team defeated Troy 77-60 on Thursday.
The Owls (20-9, 12-3 Sun Belt) controlled the game from the outset, as Raymond Taylor and Shavar Richardson both hit deep threes early in the game. Royster and fellow senior Justin Davis both got into the scoring column early. Pablo Bertone put had a beautiful finish off a feed from Taylor to put FAU up 13, 26-13. Troy (8-19, 6-9 SBC) made a small comeback, cutting the lead to nine at halftime.
After a Trojan layup shrunk the margin to seven, Taylor and Greg Gantt scored the next eight points to put the Owls up 15, and FAU was never seriously threatened again. Royster finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds and broke his own single season blocks record during the game. Shavar Richardson led all scorers with 19 points in his first start of the season.
The win clinches the Sun Belt regular season crown and guarantees a bid to the postseason NIT, just the second postseason berth in school history. It also gives the Owls 20 wins this season, the first time that has happened at the Division I level. FAU wraps up the regular season on Sunday, when they travel to Mobile to face South Alabama. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. eastern, approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
