Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will put its perfect home 3-0 mark on the line in a non-conference game against Saint Louis University on Saturday, December 10, beginning at 3 p.m., at FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. It will also be Alumni Day, in which the program will host former players and their families following the game.
The Owls, 3-4 on the season, are looking to end a three-game losing skid after dropping games to IUPUI, Lamar University and University of Kansas at the Basketball Travelers Tip-off Classic in Lawrence, Kan., following Thanksgiving.
The FAU team have not played a game since November 27, as players spent the break taking final exams and working to improve areas for the final stretch of games before opening Sun Belt Conference play on Thursday, December 29 at Arkansas State University.
"We had some good stretches in all three games [at Kansas], but we just were not able to put a full game together," said Chancellor Dugan, FAU's head women's basketball coach. "We have been working hard to improve on all areas of the game because we know that the little things like free-throw shooting, turnovers and rebounding make a big difference in winning games. That's especially true against the quality opponents that we're going to play during the rest of the season."
FAU has won all three of its home games by an average of 24.3 points, with victories against Florida colleges Warner University, with a score of 76-50 on November 11; Webber International University, with a score of 77-52 on November 18; and Bethune-Cookman University, with a score of 68-46 on November 20.
Saturday's contest marks the second-ever meeting between FAU and Saint Louis. The Billikens earned a 60-52 victory over the Owls last year in St. Louis.
"We're expecting another close game in which every offensive possession will be important and we'll have to bring our defensive intensity to the court - from the starters and our bench players. This will be another good test for us," said Dugan.
Dugan's team is led by sophomore guard Latavia Dempsey, who is averaging 10.7 points a game and has come off the bench to score in double figures in five of the team's seven games. Sophomore forward Chenise Miller averaged 12.7 points per game to earn a spot on the BTI Tip-off Classic All-Tournament team. Her scoring average has improved to 9.1 points a game and she leads the team with seven rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Takia Brooksleads the team with 20 assists to round top the offensive category leaders after seven games.
Saint Louis stands 2-5 on the season and is led by Courtney Webb's 12 points per game. Lorreal Jones is grabbing 11.1 rebounds per outing. The Billikens feature four players scoring between 8.1 and 7.4 points per game. The team is coming off a 48-46 loss at the University of Wisconsin on December 5. The two victories have come against Murray State University, with a score of 59-49 on November 26, and Southeast Missouri State University, with a score of 54-45 on November 13.
