Miami, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team dropped its season finale 3-1 at South Florida rival FIU on Friday night in Miami. The host Panthers scored three second-half goals in a six-minute span to pick up the Sun Belt Conference victory.
The Owls finish the season with a 6-11-1 record and a 2-8-1 league mark. Meanwhile, FIU improves to 11-6-2 and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament after having an 8-1-2 league record.
FAU took a quick lead on a goal by sophomore forward Jesse Shugg in the seventh minute. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada native blocked a kick from the FIU goalkeeper and the rebound went into the open net. The tally was Shugg's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
FIU squared the match on a penalty-kick goal by Chelsea Leiva in the 55th minute. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead two minutes later when Leiva found the back of the net for the second time, following a pass from Johanna Volz. The hosts added an insurance goal in the 61st minute when Carlon Jones scored her first goal of the season. April Perry and Leiva helped set up the scoring chance.
Shugg paced the FAU offensive attack with two shots, while sophomore forward Brittney Nash added two shots. Senior defender Gabriela DeVries and junior defender Breanna Lewis each had one shot.
The match closed out the collegiate careers for seniors Meghan Brown and DeVries.
