Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team is hoping home will be sweet and bring forth a change of fortune with a pair of matches this weekend at the FAU Soccer Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The Owls will have their home opener against Robert Morris University on Friday, September 3 beginning at 7 p.m., before hosting Fresno State University on Sunday, September 5 at 10 a.m.
"The home opener is always an exciting time of any season," said Brian Dooley, FAU's head women's soccer coach. "It gives our players the opportunity to play in front of students, family and friends. Those elements will definitely add enthusiasm to the match."
FAU is looking for its first victory of the season after being on the losing end of road matches against No. 9-ranked University of Florida with a score of 3-0 on August 27 and Stetson University with a score of 4-3 on August 20.
"Nobody likes to be 0-2, but I think we're a better team than our record indicates," Dooley said. "The players have been training hard. They're not getting discouraged. This weekend, we'll play the first match and try to get a positive result before focusing too much on the second match."
Freshmen have been leading the way for the Owls in the opening weeks of the season. Forwards Brittney Nash and Marisa Russo have joined defender Allyson Buerosse in recording a goal. Russo has added an assist and leads the team with five shots. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch stopped all seven shots on goal after coming off the bench to play 72 minutes at Florida -- her collegiate debut.
Robert Morris brings a 1-1-1 record into its first road match of the season. The Colonials are coming off a 1-0 victory over George Washington University on August 29, with Ayana Davis scoring the game-winning goal. She leads the team with 16 shots on the season. Robert Morris is averaging one goal per match this season.
Meanwhile, Fresno State enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after a pair of victories last weekend at the University of Texas-El Paso's Miners Invitational. The Bulldogs earned a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Texas State University on August 29 and defeated the host Miners 2-1 on August 27. Fresno State is led by Janna Sadowitz, who has scored one of the team's three goals this season and has a team-leading three points. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel has made 13 saves and has already recorded one shutout this season. The team will play Florida International University of the Sun Belt Conference on Friday, September 3 before coming to FAU on Sunday, September 5.
