Boca Raton, Fla. - Clutch shooting by basketball players Greg Gantt and Lyrell Barfield lifted their teams to key hard court victories and Florida Atlantic University's Student-Athlete of the Week Award for this week. These Owls have been multiple award winners this season: twice for Gantt and three times for Barfield.
Gantt, a sophomore from Gainesville, led the Owls with 17 points in last Saturday's 63-59 victory at Hofstra. The win extended FAU's winning streak to three games and opened a five-game holiday road swing. He made 7-of-10 shots, including two three-point field goals, and had five rebounds in the game. On the season, the 6-foot-2 guard leads the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game, has been a double-digit scorer in eight of the team's 10 games, been the team's leading scorer in six games and is shooting 48.6 percent from the field.
Meanwhile, Barfield hit the game-winning three-point field goal in the closing seconds of Sunday's dramatic 68-65 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Southern at the FAU Arena. The senior scored a game-high 20 points in the contest, with 18 points coming in the second half when the Owls responded from a 16-point halftime deficit. It marked the first time this season that the Miami native has scored 20 or more points in a game. Barfield made 7-of-15 field goals, including three three-point field goals, in the non-conference victory. For the season, the 5-foot-8 guard leads the Owls in scoring at 14 points per contest, has led team in scoring in four of the five games she has played and ranks second on the team with 14 steals.
The men's basketball team takes its 6-4 record to Siena on Monday before opening Sun Belt Conference play at Troy on Thursday, December 16, at 8 p.m. and at Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday, December 19, at 2 p.m. The matchup at ULM will be featured on the Sun Belt Network and available for viewing on the CSS cable network.
Elsewhere, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will have center stage on the Boca Raton campus this week by hosting the FAU Invitational on Saturday, December 18, at the FAU Aquatic Center, 777 Glades Road. FAU swimmers will challenge competitors from Air Force, Clemson, Denver and Rice for individual and relay honors.
Finally, the women's basketball team packs its bags for a Sunday match up at Saint Louis University, starting at 3 p.m. The Owls are looking to improve upon a 3-6 record.
