BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to rival FIU in four sets (19-25, 17-25, 38-36, 16-25) on Tuesday night.
The Golden Panthers (14-10, 8-4 Sun Belt) got out to a 10 point lead in the first set on Tuesday and Florida Atlantic (12-19, 3-9) was unable to get closer than five the rest of the set, ultimately losing the set 25-19.
FIU started off strong again in the second set, leading 11-4. Extended service runs by Ashton Krajewski and Cintia Nightingale pulled the Owls to within three at 14-11. FIU answered with a run of their own and pushed the lead back out to eight, 25-17.
The third set was tied at eight when FIU scored eight of the next nine points to take a 16-9 lead. The Owl staved off four straight match points to finally tie the set at 24. A Darija Sataric kill gave Florida Atlantic a match point of its own, but couldn't capitalize. The set went back and forth, with the Owls fighting off three match points and FIU surviving four Owl set points. Finally, with Florida Atlantic leading 37-36, Kristyna Dzmuranova put away a Cintia Nightingale set to cut the FIU lead to 2-1.
The fifth set began in the same manner that the fourth one ended, with neither team able to gain a clear advantage. The score was level at eight when the Golden Panthers went on a decisive 10-2 run, eventually winning the set 25-16.
FAU will host Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
